Early Retirees
Congratulations! You've made the decision to retire early while others your age are still working. This may have been your lifetime goal or perhaps your company made you an offer you couldn't refuse. Either way, there are some important issues you may wish to consider.
The Changing Face of Retirement The traditional notion of retirement as being a time for rest and relaxation is changing. Statistics show that Americans are living longer than ever before. A person retiring at the traditional age of 65 may well have a third of his or her life left to live. If you are retiring at forty or fifty-something, you may be living half of your life in retirement!
For many of us, this means that retirement may well be an opportunity to try other jobs or professions. What does "retirement" mean to you? Will you pursue a new career, work part-time, go back to school, or just sit back and relax? Will your income needs change over time? Will you continue to save and invest?
Retirement and You We invite you to stop for a moment and contemplate your financial position in retirement. Ask yourself the following important questions:
·Will I need to work to supplement my retirement savings?
·Will I outlive my retirement funds?
·What impact will inflation have on my retirement savings?
·I won't be able to collect my pension for "X" more years. What are my income options in the meantime?
·What should I do with my 401(k) or 403(b) account?
·Without company insurance, what do I need, if anything, to protect myself and my loved ones?
·What if I have to tap into my 401(k) or 403(b) account? Is there a way to do it without a penalty?
